About Teeju
The Journey: From Quiet Beginnings to a Bold Musical Calling
By HANA TELAHUN(Ed.D)
Born in the heart of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Teeju, Tilahun Giorgis was destined for a different rhythm in life. As the youngest child in his family with no younger siblings to share his time with, Teeju's early years were shaped not by childhood playmates, but by a profound sense of imagination, his loyal dogs, and a deep curiosity for music and sound. As far back as he can remember, anything that resembled a musical instrument became his playground including sticks, strings, cans, or flutes. He explored anything he could find that could produce sound with joy and wonder.
Teeju’s father was a proud member of the Ethiopian Royal Guard (Kibur Zebegna), and he grew up in a household shaped by discipline and a strong sense of responsibility with an expectation that he follows a more traditional route. But deep inside, his heartbeat had a different rhythm. Music wasn’t just a diversion or interest; it was a calling. A voice that whispered within him in every quiet moment.
Once Teeju reached the age to attend the prestigious Yared Music School in Addis Ababa, he realized that the idea of formally studying music seemed almost impossible. His father's strict, military background left no room for what was often seen as an unconventional profession.
Bold at his core and quietly unwavering, Teeju made a life-defining decision to follow his dream, no matter the cost. With no permission granted and no hand to guide him, he courageously took the challenge on his own. He navigated the application process to the prestigious Yared Music School and completed an intense two-month orientation without his father’s knowledge. He took every step driven by a deep love for music and for the truth of who he was. Teeju not only passed the competitive entrance exam but ranked number one among twenty students in his class.
More than a measure of talent, his achievement consolidated his courage and conviction, and that was the moment he knew he had to face his father; not with rebelliousness, but with truth. Teeju stood before his father who had taught him strength and discipline, asking for understanding, acceptance, and a blessing. With tear-filled eyes and unwavering conviction, he shared his passion. His father sat in silence for what felt like an eternity. And then, finally, with great weight and grace, he spoke: "You have my blessing, my son but on one condition: I want you to be the best." Those words became Teeju’s lifelong promise; to himself, to his father, and to his music. Every note he plays, every stage he steps on, and every soul he touches carries the spirit of that moment.
From Addis to Berklee: A Journey of Passion, Purpose, and Perseverance
Teeju’s formal musical journey began at the esteemed Yared Music School in Addis Ababa, where he quickly distinguished himself as a gifted and passionate student. His time there nurtured not only his technical skill but deepened his emotional connection to music, a language he had been speaking since childhood. But just as his studies were gaining momentum, political unrest in Ethiopia disrupted his path. Following his father’s firm decision to prioritize his safety, Teeju left his homeland and embarked on a life-changing journey that ultimately brought him to Boston, Massachusetts, the world-renowned home of Berklee College of Music.
The transition was complex and demanding. Entering a foreign country meant starting from scratch and navigating a new culture, building a new life, and preparing himself to meet the high standards of one of the most competitive music schools in the world. Teeju worked tirelessly, often balancing multiple jobs, never losing sight of the dream that had carried him across continents.
Eventually, Teeju was accepted into Berklee College of Music, where he majored in Film Scoring, mastering the art of musical storytelling for film, media, and beyond. His time at Berklee refined his craft and cultivated his creativity, allowing him to blend global influences with his Ethiopian roots.
Today, Teeju stands as a celebrated Ethio-Smooth Jazz composer, arranger, and performer, known for his original compositions that blend tradition with innovation. In Ethiopia and beyond, his music resonates with depth and sincerity. Teeju is a bridge between cultures, a voice for authenticity, and a living proof to what is attainable with genuine passion and perseverance.

Musical Philosophy
"Music is a universal language, an honest conversation that speaks directly to the soul. As a composer, my role is not to dictate what the listener should feel, but to create a space where they are free to journey within themselves. Every music composition I write, every improvisation I play, comes from an authentic place, straight from my heart."
